One of the best selling novels by Victor Hugo which has been turned into a movie with the same title, namely Les Miserables (2012) attracted the attention of many people from many countries. One of the interests is the costume that was used by the casts. Not only interesting from the culture and era, but also every background character who was in 19th century France was linked to a social class was attached to each character. Semiotic theory by Roland Barthes suggests that behind every costume detail from head to toe contains a variety of denotations meaning, connotations, and of course a myth. Besides an interesting dressing trend in the fashion world, the meaning of every detail contained in the costumes describes a status of person’s social class. The implications of this research is to apply the style of dress in accordance with the meaning contained in every dress/costume detail which is very important.
